Couple donates part of their wedding budget to Haiti relief

The powerful images coming out of Haiti prompted a Maplewood, Minnesota couple to donate some of their wedding funds to Haiti relief efforts. And they hope their move prompts others to do the same.

"It's a lot of money to us, but it's really a drop in the bucket," said groom-to-be Will Nicholson.

Nicholson will marry Leah Bogen this June. While reading the Sunday morning paper, it struck Bogen how greatly the desperate images in Haiti differed from the smiling faces in her bridal magazines. So she asked future husband if they could donate some of their wedding funds to Haiti relief efforts.

"He sort-of gave me this shocked look and said, 'Yes, I love you!'" Bogen said.

Leah Bogen & Will Nicholson - generous people

They gave $2,500 -- their entire food budget and a quarter of their wedding budget --to Partners in Health, a group that has been working in Haiti for more than 20 years.

"If this was going to make things more perfect for her, I figured, what the heck, we should do it," Nicholson said.

They hope their move encourages other couples to consider similar donations.

Meantime, the couple is already working on a new wedding budget and looking for areas to skim back, including the honeymoon and flowers. As for the food, Bogen said peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches are a possibility. But they're not worried about the food.

"We'll still have the core elements," Nicholson said. "We'll have the people we care about around, we'll have us and we'll have the rest of our lives."

I love these people! Good for them for putting everything in perspective. But Leah, you make me feel cheap. Maybe I'll make a secondary donation...

And, hey, don't worry about Leah and Will's shrinking wedding budget. As soon as I found the original article, I found this one. When people heard about the couple's generosity, donations starting pouring in to bridge the budget gap. They got offers for services, and Leah and Will say they'll donate more money for every free service that they receive.

ICU wedding

I couldn't get through this story without getting a little teary, so get out your tissues...

Janette Villalobos and Michael Arroyo had an urgent need to get married quickly - Michael is in the Navy and scheduled to ship to Afghanistan next month. They planned a backyard wedding and BBQ, but changed plans when they realized that Janette's father Johnny wouldn't be able to attend. Johnny is in the ICU at UCLA Medical Center waiting for a liver transplant.

Since Johnny's health is so fragile, everyone had to wear hospital gowns, masks, and gloves. Real flowers were not allowed so the bride carried faux flowers and the men had boutonnières cut from construction paper.

From Dad: "My daughter means the world to me...She's funny and smart and beautiful. Mike is the right one for her. I hope her life will be as blessed as she has made mine...Today I'm the proudest dad in the world."

This picture is like a vice-grip to my heart. Look at the Dad's face, and his little paper flowers.

The bride wore two gowns

I love military uniforms - so cute

When Michael returns from duty in 18 months the couple hopes to have a bigger, more traditional wedding, and Janette hopes her father will walk her down the aisle.

Me too, Janette! Good luck to all of you.

Reunited and it feels so goooooood...

Sorry if you've seen this twice - I'm still getting the hang of formatting...

A British man and his Spanish former sweetheart have finally married 16 years after they drifted apart, reunited by a love letter lost behind a fireplace for over a decade, reports said on Monday.

Steve Smith and Carmen Ruiz-Perez, both now 42, fell in love 17 years ago when she was a foreign exchange student in Brixham, southwest England, and got engaged after only a year together. But their relationship ended after she moved France to run a shop in Paris.

A few years later, in a bid to rekindle their love, Smith sent a letter to her mother's home in Spain. It was placed on the mantelpiece, but slipped down behind the fireplace and was lost for over a decade.

The missing missive was only found when builders removed the fireplace during renovation work."When I got the letter I didn't phone Steve right away because I was so nervous," Ruiz-Perez told the Herald Express local newspaper. "I nearly didn't phone him at all. I kept picking up the phone then putting it down again. "But I knew I had to make the call."

When they were reunited, it was as if time had stood still, said Smith, a factory supervisor. "When we met again it was like a film. We ran across the airport into each other's arms. We met up and fell in love all over again. Within 30 seconds of setting eyes on each other we were kissing.

"I'm just glad the letter did eventually end up where it was supposed to be," he said, after the couple married last Friday.

How sweet! I'm not sure if a letter would find me after 10 years, but it's really nice that it worked out for these two. Happy one-week anniversary to them!
